Upon a common boot of the operating system, some applications and services are launched automatically and work in the background. These can be system processes, antivirus software, or programs that were previously installed on the PC. These applications and services may cause various issues while working in the background.
Clean Boot will allow Windows to be booted with the minimum number of drivers and programs to help prevent any possible software conflicts.
- Log in to the system under an account with administrator privileges.
- Click Start. In the search box, type msconfig.exe and press Enter. This will launch System Configuration Utility.
In Windows 10, click the Search button next to the Start button, then proceed with the second part of p.2. In Windows 8 and 8.1, move your mouse pointer to the lower right corner of the screen, and click Search on the resulting panel, then proceed with the second part of p.2.
- On the "General" tab, choose "Selective startup" and uncheck the "Load startup items" option.
- Go to the "Services" tab, check the "Hide all Microsoft services" box, then click "DIsable all".
- Click OK and reboot your PC. This will be a Clean Boot.
- Click the Start button, type msconfig.exe in the search box, and press Enter. This will launch System Configuration Utility.
- On the General tab, choose "Selective Startup" and uncheck the following elements:
- Process SYSTEM.INI File
- Process WIN.INI file
- Load Startup Items
- Check the boxes for Load System Services and Use Original BOOT.INI.
- Go to the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box, then click "DIsable all", then OK.
- Reboot your PC. This will be a Clean Boot.
After you finish troubleshooting using Clean Boot, perform the following steps to return your PC to normal boot:
- Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the search box, and press Enter.
If needed, enter your password or click the Continue button.
- On the General tab, select "Normal startup" and click OK.
- Click "Reboot" to restart your PC.
