Why Do Vehicles in the Tech Tree Have Different Research Costs?

This article describes the principle of researching vehicles, using the Soviet Tech Tree as an example.

The current version of the Tech Tree allows you to move to the next tier or another vehicle type in several ways and from multiple vehicles.

The Tech Tree currently displays the least amount of XP that needs to be spent to research a vehicle. The research itself takes the shortest route, for which the minimum amount of XP is required.

Let's take the Soviet SU-152 tank destroyer as an example, which can be researched the following ways:

  • From the SU-100 tank destroyer
  • From the KV-2 heavy tank

To research the SU-152 tank destroyer from the SU-100 tank destroyer, you'll need 31,500 XP.

To research the SU-152 tank destroyer from the KV-2 heavy tank, you'll need 93,000 XP.

The difference in research cost is due to the amount of XP previously spent on researching various modules, like guns, turrets, radios, suspension, etc.

If you research a vehicle not from a particular vehicle but directly from the Tech Tree and you have the required Free XP to research it, the XP will be spent.

Let's take a look at several examples of researching the SU-152 tank destroyer from the general Tech Tree:

  1. There is enough XP accumulated on the KV-2 heavy tank for researching the SU-152, but there is no accumulated XP on the SU-100 tank destroyer. In addition, there is enough Free XP to research the SU-152. If you research the SU-152 from the general Tech Tree, Free XP will be deducted, since there is no accumulated XP on the SU-100, but the option to research it via the SU-100 is less expensive.
  2. There's enough XP accumulated on the SU-100 tank destroyer to research the SU-152. If you research the SU-152 from the general Tech Tree, the XP will be deducted from the SU-100 tank destroyer.
  3. There is XP accumulated on the KV-2, but it's not enough to research the SU-152. If you research the SU-152 from the general Tech Tree, the whole amount of accumulated XP will be deducted from the KV-2, and the remaining XP will be taken from Free XP.

These examples apply not only to the aforementioned Soviet vehicles but also to all similar cases.

In case you make mistakes, compensation is not provided.

Your actions in the game, so long as they don't contradict the game's logic, are not reversable. It's possible that the Tech Tree will be improved and changed in future updates.
